Toms Autos is owned and operated by five times New Zealand Rally Champions – Richard and Sara Mason. Our history in the Wairarapa runs deep – it was opened more than 40 years ago by Richards’ parents Tom and Alison Mason.

At Toms Autos we have some of the very finest technicians Masterton has to offer – with several having worked at Mazda, Citroen, Volvo and Toyota franchises. Two of our technicians have recently received training in hybrid and electrical vehicle diagnostics, maintenance and servicing.

Your Car Battery

We are not using our cars much at the moment and you may find that you could start having problems starting it...

Modern day cars are full of computers which absorb energy, and if a car is sitting and not recharging, the battery can die within two weeks. Your car battery is the vehicle system that is most susceptible to inactivity-induced problems.

If you are not using your car much, to help save your battery you can:
- Remove the negative battery connection while its sitting around (just make sure to reconnect the terminal before attempting to start the car)
- Place the vehicle on trickle charge (if you have one)
- Start the car at least once a week and run it for 20-30 min (in a well ventilated area!) just to keep the battery topped up.

Please note running your vehicle for a short period won’t be able to drastically alter the amount of charge in a battery, but it’ll help.

Did you know - Frequent, short car trips contribute to an earlier lifespan for car batteries. It takes roughly eight hours of continuous driving for the alternator to fully charge the battery.

At Toms we have implemented a large amount of changes to keep everyone safe - including using disinfectant wipes to clean the interior of cars we work on, using hand sanitizer, protocols to disinfect areas regularly, using disposable gloves while carrying out WoFs, disinfecting keys, stepping up our hand washing plus much more.

Why You Need To Change Your Oil & Filter
